Customization

Yes, we can set you up with local runners and your stay at a hotel. We are currently developing new products that will cater to people wanting a training camp experience.

Private tours will obviously be more expensive than a group tour, but, after you and one of our experienced guides work out an itinerary, we will be able to calculate the price. For a ten day tour, it will generally be in the range of $2,000-$5,000.

Ethiopia Specific

Yes, in areas of the Central Rift Valley strands of malaria are present. You will need to consult your doctor for information about prophylaxis and prevention.

Mosquito nets are available in the malaria areas where we will be staying, and Ethiopic encourages its travelers to use them.

The staple food of the Ethiopian diet is enjera – a flat, spongy, sour bread on which spicy stews are served. The Ethiopic Running Experience emphasizes a complete Ethiopic experience, so we encourage all clients to try the local food, but we understand that the new diet + running may disagree. Therefore, on request, we will try to cater to all clients dietary needs within the limitations of the country. If all else fails, pasta is available almost everywhere.

There are 88 languages native to Ethiopia with Amharic and Oromifa being the most widely spoken languages. Some people, including your guides, will speak English, but most people will not. However, sign language, translation, and friendliness will allow you to get by without knowing the local languages.

The tour will continue and we will not give a refund if it rains. Rainy season in Ethiopia, generally, lasts from June-September, so tour prices are discounted at this time.

Preparation

Our guides are equipped with first aid kits and have been trained to help with minor injuries. If a more serious injury occurs, we will never be more than a few hours from a hospital. Travelers are encouraged to buy travel insurance in the case of a medical evacuation.

Visitors from the United States can obtain a visa on arrival at Bole Airport for a cost of $50 USD.

Most costs are covered by the tour package, but you’ll want some extra money for purchasing souvenirs and any unexpected expenses. We recommend carrying a debit card and some hard currency (~$200 USD) for emergencies. There are several ATM machines where you will be able to withdraw local currency using your foreign debit card; Mastercard is more widely accepted. It is also wise to advice your bank that you will be traveling to Ethiopia, so they do not block your account.

Check the voltage on your electronics. The US uses 110 V 60 hz, while Ethiopia uses 220 V 50hz. Any electronic device not rated for this should be used with a power supply converter.

The temperature and weather in Ethiopia ranges from place to place. In highland areas (>6,500 ft), you should expect cooler temperatures. At night it can reach freezing, but in the daytime it will stay in the 70s (F). In the rift valley, expect warmer temperatures, but it’s unusual for temperatures to get into the 90s (F). From June to September is rainy season, and there is sometimes a short rainy season from February to March. Otherwise, expect very pleasant weather.
