Run the Great Ethiopan Run 10 km race and explore historic Ethiopia on foot as we jog through the ancient Abyssinian landscape Ethiopia is one of the most ancient civilizations, not only in Africa, but in the world. If you choose the Footprints of History itinerary, you will be stepping in the footsteps of Abyssinian kings and the priests that formed the foundation of Christianity. On this tour, you will see ancient monasteries hewn from solid rock, castles reminiscent of medieval Europe, and highland farmers living a lifestyle that hasn’t changed in hundreds of years. |

Island monastery and hot spring at Wenchi Lake
Day 1: Arrive and Orientation to Ethiopia Arrive and stay the night in Addis Ababa, while being briefed on the week’s activities.
Day 2: Wenchi Lake Day Trip Drive the 150 km to Lake Wenchi to meet up with the community tourism group that operates activities at Wenchi. Descend to the crater lake on horseback or by foot and take a short boat ride to visit the island’s monastery.
Day 3: Yaya and Addis Day On the outskirts of Addis Ababa, the elite national clubs train and live in and around the Yaya Village Hotel and Training Center. On a guided run, we will get to peak into this lifestyle.
Day 4: RACE DAY – Great Ethiopian Run In one of the biggest mass races in Africa, the Great Ethiopian Run is a 6.2 mile long fast moving party. You will see a festive side of Ethiopian culture. Following the race, we will spend the rest of the day in the capital shopping for souvenirs, indulging in luxuries and touring the city.
Day 5: Fly to Gondar Visit the historic, former capital of Ethiopia, Gondar, and see the 17th century castle fortress of Emperor Fasiledes – Fasil Ghebbi. Optional evening run around the town. 4-6 miles
Day 6: Semien Mountains In the morning drive to Semien Mountains National Park and go for a day hike/run among Gelada Baboons. Keep your eyes open for the endemic Ethiopian Wolf and Walia Ibex. Stay over at the Lima Limo Lodge. 5-10 mile hike/run.
Day 7: Travel to Lalibela Drive back to Gondar and fly over to Lalibela. Optional 5-10 mile evening run around Lalibela villages.
Day 8: THANKSGIVING in Lalibela After an optional morning run through the villages of Lalibela, visit the amazing rock hewn churches – the third UNESCO World Heritage site on this itinerary. Thanksgiving feast in the evening. Optional 5-10 mile morning run around Lalibela villages.
Day 9: Fly back to Addis Return to Addis and get some last minute shopping, while catching some one of the cultural dance shows in the evening.
Day 10: Entoto and Departure A morning visit to the mountain to the immediate north of the city, we’ll get a final run before departure. Some of the top Ethiopian athletes can be found zigzagging through the Eucalyptus forest and founding spot of Addis Ababa. 5-10 mile in the forest
